This was a rough year for my husband and I. First, I got laid off from my job at the phone company. It was enough of a shock when I got laid off, but when Alex got in the accident just a few months later it couldn't have been more devastating. He hurt his back so bad he could not continue to do his construction job. All of this couldn't have come at a worse time. We were still paying off our house, and we had just bought a new car for our daughter's 16th birthday. In addition, we also were paying to put our oldest son through college. We thought we were going to have to file for bankruptcy. I considered going to family for financial help, but I couldn't bring myself to ask them for money. It just seemed to be a very shameful thing to do. I also just couldn't bring myself to tell my daughter we might have to take away her car, even though we desperately needed the money. She had been waiting to get that car for so long, and had been bringing home straight A's to earn it. Thankfully, things have a way of turning around. My son managed to get a full scholarship for his achievements, which lightened the load considerably. Not too long after that, I used my qualifications to find a job that paid even better than my last. This all taught me not to lose hope.
