I wasn’t about to play around with something like this, I was more than four months behind on my mortgage payments and the letters and notices from my lender were beginning to pile up on my end table, foreclosure almost seemed eminent. I’m no good under pressure and I have absolutely no capacity to understand legal jargon so I called a housing counselor that I found through the US Department of Housing and Urban Development to see if I could get some help fixing this very frightening situation. Unlike a lot of places that advertise their services on the internet, my HUD counselor was free, which makes a lot of sense for someone who’s trying to get out of debt. My HUD counselor explained all of the nuances of the law and all of the different options I could pursue. Together we were able to reorganize my finances so I was actually able to pay my mortgage each month and still have enough money left over to eat. I really would have been lost without her. I wish more people knew about the services offered by HUD so those companies that scam the poor people who think they have no where else to turn could be put out of business.
